A man of the cloth, Prophet Samson Sangojinmi, leader of Celestial Church of Christ, narrowly escaped death in Atteridgeville after being accused of selling drugs to school-going children.
According to reports, a group of rowdy youths stormed the church, searching for drugs and other alleged illegal activities. The youths, some of whom were allegedly drinking beer, demanded to meet the prophet in person.
Upon arrival, the prophet was ruthlessly beaten by the mob. The attack resulted in the torching of at least two houses, including the church, and left the prophet bleeding profusely.
Evidence and Context ¶
A woman, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed to have seen school children in uniform entering the prophet's houses. She alleged that some of the girls found in those houses were already drunk and wore short outfits, suggesting prostitution.
The prophet denied any wrongdoing, stating that he had done nothing but help people in need through his church. He expressed sadness over the attack, saying, "As far as I know, I have done nothing wrong and I don’t know where these wild rumors are coming from. All we have done is help people in this church. For instance, when they want food or a place to stay, we provide them with that."
Response and Consequences ¶
Police spokesperson, Captain Augustinah Selepe, stated that they are investigating the matter to ascertain the truth behind the allegations. Those who attacked the prophet and destroyed his property may face arrest for taking the law into their own hands.
The incident highlights the dangers of mob justice and the importance of allowing the law to take its course in addressing allegations of crime.
