In Thailand, prisoners, including murderers, rapists, and robbers, can potentially be freed from jail if they win a fight against a professional fighter.
A recent case involved notorious Thai gangster Noy Khaopan, who was released from prison after winning a fight against a professional fighter from Kansas. Khaopan had been imprisoned for the murder of a teenage boy, whom he killed by driving a knife into the child’s ear.
The prison scheme involves inmates competing against professional fighters, with the winner being set free and receiving prize money. However, if the inmate loses, they simply return to their cell.

When the child’s parents found out that his murderer had been released, they were shocked. According to documentary director Micah Brown, "When we told them, the father wanted to kill Noy. The mother was inconsolably in pain. They don’t think it’s fair for the program to apply to a crime like this one."
