A deadly attack occurred at an African Union base in Somalia's Gedo region, according to unconfirmed reports. The base, run by Kenyan troops, was assaulted by dozens of al-Shabab fighters on Friday, Ahmed Hassan told the AP news agency by phone from Elwak, a town near the scene of the attack.
The attack began with a suicide car bomb, followed by heavy gunfire as fighters stormed the base, Hassan said.
