On July 22, 2019, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) initiated an investigation into allegations of drug abuse in at least six schools in Busia County.
The investigation was prompted by concerns over rampant drug usage, which has led to many students failing to complete their studies.
According to Ibrahim Rugut, the TSC Busia County Director, education stakeholders are working together to find ways to prevent students from accessing drugs.
Rugut also urged the community to share any information they have with the police, chiefs, and education officers to help combat the issue.
A recent report by the National Authority for Campaign against Alcohol and Drug Abuse implicated teachers as access points for hard drugs in schools.
