President Uhuru Kenyatta met with Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officials at State House in Nairobi on Tuesday, February 7, to discuss the ongoing voter registration exercise and preparations for the August 8, 2017 General Election.
The IEBC officials, led by Chairman Wafula Chebukati and Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba, presented Uhuru with their strategic plan ahead of the election.
According to Uhuru, the officials also presented him with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Strategic Plan 2015-2020. He said,
"Also received the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Strategic Plan 2015-2020."
The meeting comes amidst complaints of malpractice in voter listing, with the opposition accusing the IEBC of colluding with the government to rig the August polls. However, the IEBC has admitted to irregularities, including double voter registration, and has vowed to clean up the register.
Over 50,000 genuine ID cards have been used to register voters twice, according to the IEBC. The commissioners were scheduled to meet opposition leaders on Wednesday, February 8, to address these concerns.
