A top CID officer has opted to retire early rather than accept a transfer to Garissa County, citing concerns over insecurity and the presence of Al Shabaab.
Bonface Mwaniki, the newly posted Garissa County CID Commander, rejected the transfer in a letter to CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro. Mwaniki, a former head of the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU), stated that as a prominent figure in the fight against terrorism, he feared Al Shabaab would target him in Garissa.
Mwaniki expressed concern for his family's safety, saying he could not risk being killed by the militant group. His decision has raised questions about the level of security in Garissa County and the impact of Al Shabaab's presence on law enforcement personnel.
Mwaniki previously served as the head of ATPU until last year, when he attended a training course in administration at the National Defence College in Karen.
