July 22, 2019 - The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has sparked outrage with its latest move to demote thousands of teachers. The commission's decision comes after a court victory for the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) in a long-running court battle.

According to reports, the TSC will place teachers in their old job grades, suspending promotions until after July 2020 when the current collective bargaining agreement lapses.

The TSC has argued that suspending the performance management tools is an affront to public interest, making teachers unaccountable to anyone. However, critics see this move as an intimidation tactic against teachers and their union.

KNUT has been at the forefront of the fight against the TSC's controversial promotion, appraisal, and transfer rules. The union's victory in court has been seen as a major setback for the TSC.

KNUT's acting secretary-general, Moses Nthurima, has stated that the union's main goal is to protect the gains under the 2016 CBA, which had been put at risk by the judgment.
