On July 19, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta presided over the launch of the largest wind farm in Africa, located on the shores of Lake Turkana.
The wind farm, comprising 365 turbines, each with a capacity to generate 850Kw, is a significant milestone in Kenya's ambitious renewable energy push.
Kenya has made remarkable strides in harnessing renewable energy, with 70% of its energy generated from sources such as wind power, hydropower, and geothermal power.
According to President Kenyatta, "Kenya is without a doubt on course to be a global leader in renewable energy." The country aims to produce 100% of its energy from renewable supplies by 2020.
The $775 million (KSh80 billion) project was funded by the African Development Bank, East African Development Bank, European Investment Fund, Nedbank Capital, Norfund, and other investors.
The wind farm is expected to bring down electricity costs and increase energy access in areas that lack electricity, marking a significant step towards achieving Kenya's renewable energy goals.
