Lilian Nyokoa Ngota, a 37-year-old commercial sex worker, was sentenced to five hours of community service for stealing a Huawei mobile phone valued at Sh10,000 from a client who refused to pay for her services.

According to court records, Ngota admitted to stealing the phone from Joseph Gitonga Mwenda, who claimed he had no money to pay for her services after they engaged in intimacy at a lodging. The accused stated that she took the phone as payment because she had children to feed and bills to pay.

Incident and Arrest

The incident occurred during the festive season last year. Ngota met Mwenda, who was intoxicated at the time, and they agreed to engage in intimacy in exchange for money. After completing their encounter, Mwenda claimed he had no money to pay, prompting Ngota to take his phone.

Mwenda later reported the incident at Central Police Station, stating that he had also lost Sh42,000. With the assistance of Safaricom, the phone was traced to Zimmerman, where Ngota was arrested.

Court Proceedings

In court, Ngota admitted to stealing the phone but denied stealing the money. Her bold admission and the circumstances surrounding the case raised questions from the magistrate, who expressed bewilderment at the openness with which both parties discussed their actions.

Despite the court's apparent sympathy for Ngota's situation, she was sentenced to community service at the Law Courts.

The recovered account cited reporting by Nairobi News.
