Published on July 22, 2019, Befrienders Kenya highlights common misconceptions about grief and loss.

One such myth is that grief will 'soon go away' if ignored. However, real healing only comes when we confront the source of our grief and actively seek ways to deal with it.

Another misconception is that showing emotions is a sign of weakness. Feelings of sadness, sorrow, pain, hurt, or loneliness are common with grief, and it's essential to acknowledge and express them.

It's also a misconception that 'moving on' means you're not hurting. Grieving can take a long time, but learning to appreciate the good helps keep memories alive. Life must move on, but it's essential to acknowledge and process your emotions.

Each person's grieving process is unique, and it's crucial to seek support from family, friends, or a counsellor. Befrienders Kenya offers free confidential support for adults and children, which can be accessed by telephone, email, or face-to-face.

For most of us, bereavement will be the most distressing experience we will ever face. Grief is what we feel when somebody we are close to dies, and everyone experiences it differently.
