The University of Nairobi Council has accused the National Treasury of reducing its budget proposal for the 2017/18 financial year from Sh6.2 billion to Sh4.5 billion.
According to University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Prof Peter Mbithi, the Council and University Management Board had approved and submitted a budget proposal of Sh6.2 billion to the ministry.
However, the ministry decreased the budget by Sh1.7 billion before forwarding it to the National Assembly. Mbithi expressed concerns that the proposed budget cut is based on the new Differentiated Unit Costs (DUC) formula, which he believes should be implemented gradually.
The university has experienced a decline in budgetary support, leading to financial constraints and delays in exchequer releases. Despite this, the council denied allegations of the university's bankruptcy and inability to pay salaries, calling them exaggerations.
Mbithi also dismissed reports that the institution had been censured for issuing Masters and PhD degrees to students whose theses were written by agents. He called on the Commission for University Education (CUE) to provide a public explanation regarding the matter.
