A photo shared online by Robert Alai shows former President Mwai Kibaki accompanied by Mary Wambui at the late Nderitu Gachagua's funeral.

In March 2009, former President Mwai Kibaki called a press conference to announce that he only had one wife, the late Lucy Kibaki, after rumors that he was a polygamist. There were talks that he was married to current Othaya MP Mary Wambui as well.

Kibaki and Wambui are said to have met in 1974 when she was working in the Kanu office in Othaya; he later employed her as a manager to his Rware Farm in Naromoru.

At the funeral, Wambui was by Kibaki's side as he met President Uhuru and other dignitaries. This has raised eyebrows about the nature of their relationship.

According to the Daily Nation, when Kibaki won the 2002 presidential elections, Wambui moved to Lavington Estate in Nairobi after buying a house from a former South African diplomat. Both her houses were guarded by police officers.

This special relationship has raised questions about whether Kibaki indeed had only one wife, Lucy Kibaki.

Wambui was among the first people to condole with the retired president after he lost his wife.

The recovered account cited reporting by Tuko.
