A group of 40 students from various high schools in Kirinyaga and Nyeri Counties were arrested on a Nairobi-bound bus after police found some of them hiding matchboxes, bhang, and cigarettes in their underwear.
The students were traveling for the August holiday on Wednesday afternoon when police intercepted the bus on the Karatina-Nairobi highway. A thorough search revealed one student with several rolls of bhang, tobacco, and matches hidden in her underwear.
According to Resident Jadidah Nyawira, she spotted heavily intoxicated students in the bus at Kibirigwi trading centre, where loud music was being played. The students were misbehaving publicly before the police arrived.
Response from Authorities ¶
Kirinyaga County Education Director Elizabeth Karani stated that many of the students arrested were from Nyeri County. She requested the county police commander and commissioner to take action against the driver and conductor.
Karani also mentioned that another bus ferrying intoxicated students to Nairobi was intercepted at Makuyu on the same day. She urged the security team to be alert, especially during the August holiday, to ensure any vehicle ferrying young boys and girls is thoroughly inspected.
"We will deal with the students from the board of management to ensure such is not repeated," Karani said.
The incident has raised concerns about the behavior of high school students and the need for increased vigilance from authorities.
