A case seeking compensation from the British government for 40,000 Kenyan freedom fighters has begun in the UK. The Kenyans are claiming compensation for torture, wrongful detention, and forced labor allegedly committed by British officials during the UK's rule in Kenya.
The claims were filed at the High Court in London. According to the court's schedule, the case will be heard over a six-month period.
Lawyer Freddie Cosgrove-Gibson, representing the victims, stated that the Mau Mau group took the matter to court after the UK's Foreign Commonwealth Office showed little interest in settling the issue out of court. This is similar to a previous case where a group was awarded approximately Sh2.6 billion in 2013.
The court will consider 27 individual cases, selected randomly, to determine the types of claims to be registered. Locally, the group is represented by lawyer Cecil Miller.
