According to sources, President Uhuru Kenyatta has decided to distance himself from Senator Mike Sonko. This decision comes after a long period of consideration. Sonko was once very close to the president and had direct access to him in case of urgent matters.
The relationship between Sonko and the president began to deteriorate after an incident where Sonko called the president and put him on loudspeaker. Following this incident, Sonko's calls to the State House were reportedly blocked.
TNA Operatives' Role ¶
Operatives from The National Alliance (TNA) have been working to alienate Sonko, citing that he is an embarrassment to the Jubilee government. Despite standing by the president during his ICC trials, Sonko's lack of political clout is seen as a reason for the president's decision to distance himself.
The president suffered a defeat in the Kajiado Central By-Election, which led to frustration with Sonko and Aden Duale for failing to deliver votes as promised. Sources indicate that the president's strategists view Duale as having lost his influence among Muslims.
Replacement Speculation ¶
Speculation surrounds who will replace Sonko, with Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru emerging as a potential candidate. Waweru has garnered support from several Kikuyu MPs and MCAs allied with TNA, and is seen as having a strong financial backing.
Sonko is set to face Waweru in the Jubilee Alliance Party (JAP) nominations. Waweru has convinced Ferdinand Waititu to shift his focus to the Kabete by-election and potentially run for Kiambu governorship in the future.
