Published on July 21, 2019, a local press exposé highlighted several transgressions in contravention of public safety that should have been detected and curbed by government oversight bodies.
These incidents included fuel spillage, expired peanut butter, release of factory effluent into storm drains, misadventures in public health institutions, and the sale of meat laced with types and levels of preservatives unfit for human consumption.
It is alarming that these agencies, responsible for overseeing consumer protection policies, have been seemingly asleep on the job. The media has had to intervene to rouse them from slumber and prompt action.
As a result, innocent Kenyans have suffered the consequences of these inactions, including loss of life and exposure to hazardous chemicals.
It is imperative that public health officers and government oversight bodies are led by individuals with a genuine passion for their work, rather than political appointees.
