A five-storey building under construction in Lower Kabete, Kiambu County collapsed early Saturday morning, with three construction workers narrowly escaping death.
According to residents of Ndongoro village, an alert had been issued regarding the safety of the residential building, which was nearly complete, but the owner proceeded with construction despite the warning.
Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud bang followed by a huge cloud of dust at around 1 am, prompting nearby residents to scream for help. The witnesses reported that the entire first floor of the building had sunk.
Following the incident, police from the nearby King'eero Police Post arrived at the scene and ordered the evacuation of nearby residents. The three caretakers who were inside the building managed to jump out and escape.
Area residents claimed that the building had developed huge cracks, which were later sealed by the contractor. They are demanding action be taken against the developer of the structure.
