A speeding Nissan matatu collided with a crowd in Githurai along the Thika Super Highway on Wednesday night, resulting in the deaths of five people.
According to police spokesperson Charles Owino, three of the victims died instantly, while the other two succumbed to their injuries upon arrival at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Owino stated that the matatu, which is registered under Manchester Sacco, was traveling from the City Centre to Thika when it lost control and struck pedestrians, shops, and an electric post.

The authorities are still searching for the driver, who fled the scene after the accident. Two of the deceased victims, who died at Kenyatta National Hospital, have not been identified, and their bodies are currently at the hospital's mortuary. The remaining three bodies have been transferred to the City mortuary.
Owino emphasized that unroadworthy public service vehicles will not be tolerated on the roads and warned reckless drivers that they will face consequences. He expressed regret over the avoidable loss of life, saying,
"It’s unfortunate that people die from mistakes that could be avoided. We will apprehend the driver as he is registered as a member of Manchester Sacco."
