On a challenging afternoon at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, Shane Lowry held firm to win the 2019 British Open by six strokes on Sunday, July 21, 2019.
Lowry, a 32-year-old Irishman, overcame gusting winds and heavy rain to secure his first major win and only his second PGA Tour victory.
His final round of 72 allowed him to finish at 15 under par, a significant improvement from his 2016 United States Open performance at Oakmont Country Club, where he shot a six-over-par 76 and finished tied for second.
Lowry's win marked the first British Open played on the island of Ireland since 1951, and he birdied the 15th hole to give himself a six-stroke cushion over English golfer Tommy Fleetwood.
