On July 21, 2019, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) CEO Robert Muthomi stepped aside to allow investigations into the transfer of Sofapaka ace John Avire, amidst allegations of influencing the player's move to Egypt.
According to a statement released by the federation's communications team and signed by Muthomi himself, he had taken the decision as it was 'the best course of action both for public confidence on myself and the institution that is FKF.'
He stated that he had requested the FKF President to allow him to step aside for investigations to commence, citing the need for a 'thoroughly credible process' to be undertaken for his own integrity and that of the office of the FKF General Secretary.
He also acknowledged that his continued execution of the role of General Secretary while the process was ongoing may be seen as an attempt to circumvent or influence the investigation process.
Despite stepping aside, Muthomi maintained that he had not resigned his position as General Secretary and CEO of FKF, and that he believed he would be vindicated and cleared of the malicious accusations at the end of the investigation.
He expressed his trust in the FKF President to expedite the investigation process and ensure justice and fairness for all.
