The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has strongly rejected claims that the Jubilee party is dominating the ongoing mass voter registration process, stating that these assertions are part of Jubilee's propaganda.
According to Junet Mohammed, ODM's Director of Elections, the party's independent tally by county and constituency shows that Jubilee is actually trailing behind the National Super Alliance (NASA) significantly.
Junet attributed the supposed low voter turnout in some areas to the challenges faced by potential voters, including difficulties in accessing national identity cards, which he described as a tool of sabotage by the Jubilee regime. Despite a presidential directive to issue IDs within three days, many have found it nearly impossible to obtain them.
The ODM leader criticized the media for using outdated regional designations to describe NASA and Jubilee strongholds, suggesting that this approach no longer accurately reflects the political landscape.
Raila Odinga, in a recent appearance, questioned whether certain regions, such as Meru and parts of the Rift Valley, could still be considered Jubilee strongholds given the significant support he received there.
Response to Allegations ¶
Junet urged NASA supporters not to be discouraged by what he termed as heightened propaganda and falsehoods regarding poor turnout. He emphasized that the voter listing exercise is ongoing and that NASA supporters continue to participate in large numbers despite the obstacles they face.
Context and Consequences ¶
The narrative of low voter turnout in NASA strongholds has been used by some, including Kabete MP Ferdinand Waititu, to spread fear and warn of dire consequences if Raila Odinga were to win, including humiliating Mt. Kenya residents. However, these tactics have not seemed to sway public opinion as intended, with areas like Mount Kenya West and South Rift showing renewed support for ODM.
