Painful or even mildly uncomfortable sexual intercourse is often the first indication of a condition known as Vaginismus.

Some women describe the sensation as the feeling of a partner 'hitting a wall' during penetration. Others experience similar discomfort when inserting a tampon or during a pelvic exam.

Symptoms and Treatment

Medical practitioners recommend that women with Vaginismus practice progressive desensitization through Kegel exercises to gain control over their pelvic floor muscles.

A simple exercise involves squeezing the muscles used to stop urine flow for 2 seconds and then relaxing them. Gradually introducing finger insertion while doing Kegel exercises can help desensitize the muscles.

If exercises do not alleviate discomfort, and Vaginismus is linked to fear or anxiety, therapy may also be beneficial. Additionally, infections can cause discomfort, making it essential to consult a doctor to determine the underlying cause of pain during sexual intercourse.
