Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko intervened on behalf of a new mother, Ms Edith Wangui, who had been detained at Fatima Maternity Hospital in Ongata Rongai for nearly a month due to an unpaid hospital bill of Sh155,000.
Wangui, who lost her husband while four months pregnant, underwent a complicated caesarean section and was unable to pay the bill. Several Facebook groups, including Killimani Moms, Rongai Mums, and Pregnant and Nursing Mums, attempted to raise funds to assist her but were unsuccessful in covering the full amount.
Senator Sonko stepped in after being contacted by these groups, which had managed to raise half of the bill. He stated,
"My special thanks go to Killimani Moms, Rongai Mums and Pregnant and Nursing Mums groups for highlighting the case and trying their best, the groups raised half of the bill and contacted me to raise the balance which I sent my team to settle."
Wangui expressed gratitude towards the senator for his assistance. Sonko's team also provided her with necessities, further alleviating her situation.
