Kenya is home to over 40 accredited universities, with more than half offering engineering courses alongside other programs.
The Engineering Board of Kenya (EBK) has published a list of universities legally authorized to provide engineering training in the country. The EBK advises employers against hiring engineers who graduated from unaccredited institutions.
The following universities are accredited to offer engineering courses:
- University of Nairobi
- Moi University
- Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT)
- Egerton University
- Dedan Kimathi University
According to the EBK, accreditation is granted based on whether a program is intellectually credible, coherent, and meets national needs, as well as the needs of students and stakeholders.
The board will only register graduates of accredited programs. Furthermore, it is illegal for unregistered individuals to offer engineering services. Therefore, training institutions are warned that admitting students to unapproved engineering programs is also illegal.
This implies that engineering students from certain universities, such as Mount Kenya University and Kenyatta University, are not permitted to practice or engage in engineering-related activities.
