Liquor store owners in Nairobi's Eastlands are taking precautions following a government crackdown on illegal brew.
According to reports, on Friday, many wine and spirit outlets in Umoja, Kayole, and Tena estates remained closed due to rumors of an impending raid by the National Agency of Campaign Against Drug Abuse (Nacada) officers.
A spot check in Umoja 1, 2, and Innercore revealed that most bars and wine and spirits outlets were shut, apparently fearing a raid.
The government has begun canceling licenses for various alcohol brands nationwide as part of its crackdown on illegal liquor.
The Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) plans to publish a list of second-generation brands that cannot be sold until they have been inspected and cleared.
Inspectors will continue to monitor for drinks containing methanol, a toxic form of alcohol.
