On July 20, 2019, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i toured Matungu in Kakamega County and announced new security measures to combat the rising violence.
Matungu has witnessed 18 deaths in the past month, prompting the government to take action.
According to Matiang'i, a contingent of General Service Unit (GSU) officers will be deployed to boost security and support the regular police.
He also warned that politicians fueling the violence will be arrested and dealt with accordingly.
On Wednesday, July 17, 2019, six key suspects were arrested, including a jailbird believed to be coordinating the attacks from Nairobi.
Senator Cleophas Malala and Rashid Echesa, a former sports CS, have been arrested in connection with the recent killings in Matungu.
They are being questioned over claims that they are linked to the activities of the gang in Matungu.
