On the cusp of a major milestone, Disney's live-action remake of The Lion King is poised to shatter box office records this weekend.

According to reports, the film raked in a staggering $78.5 million on its opening day, Friday.

While still trailing behind the 2017 blockbuster Beauty and the Beast, which debuted with a weekend total of $175 million, The Lion King has already surpassed the remake of Aladdin, which premiered in May with a $91.5 million opening.

Although it may not surpass the record-breaking opening of the final Avengers installment, which claimed $357.1 million earlier this year, The Lion King's impressive opening is a testament to the enduring power of nostalgia.
