On the final day of the Kenya Prison Service athletics championships, held yesterday at Kasarani, Timothy Cheruiyot stole the show in the 800m event.

Cheruiyot, a world 1,500m silver medallist, started strong, hitting the first lap in 50.7 seconds and stretching the gap in the backstretch to win in a time of 1:44.60.

Isaack Kipketer came in second with a time of 1:49.37, while Duncun Ololoisha finished third in 1:50.28.

Cheruiyot attributed his performance to his preparations for the national championships and the ongoing Diamond League circuits, saying, 'My aim was to run well as part of my preparations ahead of the national championships and the ongoing Diamond League circuits.'

Other notable performances included Celliphine Chespol, the world U-20 steeplechase record holder, and Charles Yosei Mneria, who both impressed the sizable crowd that included Kenya Prisons Commissioner General Wycliffe Ongalo and his deputy Benjamin Njoga.

Rosemary Wanjiru also triumphed in the women's 10,000m event.
