On July 21, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared that the Thirdway Alliance had gathered the required number of signatures to force a referendum on changing the 2010 Constitution.

As part of the Building Bridges Initiative, proposals have been presented to change various sections of the Constitution to improve governance and eliminate acrimonious electoral politics.

The Thirdway Alliance's Punguza Mizigo initiative has identified 16 areas for change, including reducing the presidential tenure from two terms of five years to a single term of seven years, and increasing financial allocation to counties from 15% to 35% of audited national revenues.

However, critics argue that the proposed changes may not address the root causes of the Constitution's implementation issues, which include administrative lapses and infidelity to the rule of law.
