On July 19, 2019, President Kenyatta commissioned Africa's largest wind power farm in Loiyangalani, Turkana County, marking a significant milestone in Kenya's renewable energy sector.
The Lake Turkana Wind Power farm boasts an impressive installed capacity of 310 megawatts, providing clean, reliable, and low-cost electricity to the country.
According to reports, the wind power project has reduced the usage of expensive diesel-generated thermal power, saving Kenya more than Sh8 billion in the last eight months. The plant injected over 1.2 billion kilowatt-hours (KWh) of electricity over the same period.
President Kenyatta hailed the commissioning of the project as a proud moment for Kenya, saying, “With this monumental feat, as Kenya scores another first in Africa, I challenge all Kenyans to remain, resilient builders who build best when called upon to build greatly.”
He emphasized the government's commitment to encouraging both Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) and the private sector to develop wind farms and other renewable green sources of electricity.
“The successful implementation of Lake Turkana Wind Power demonstrates Kenya’s outstanding credentials as an investment destination in Africa and is a perfect example of the immense potential of the public-private partnership model of implementing development projects,” said Kenyatta.
