On July 20, 2019, hundreds of mourners gathered at Gisambai Primary School grounds in Vihiga County for the burial ceremony of Kenyan football legend Joe Kadenge.

Among those who attended the ceremony were Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi, Vihiga Governor Wilberforce Otichilo, and Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) secretary-general Francis Atwoli.

Speaking at the burial, Odinga announced that Nairobi's City Stadium would be renamed after Kadenge, who passed away on July 7th at the age of 84 while undergoing treatment at Meridian Hospital in Nairobi.
