On July 19, 2019, ODM leader Raila Odinga addressed maize farmers at his Opoda farm in Bondo, Siaya County, where he expressed his opposition to the government's plan to import maize.
According to Raila, the move would create an opportunity for cartels to take advantage of Kenyans, particularly those who are set to harvest their maize in the coming month.
He was joined by Busia Woman Rep Florence Mutua, who also supported the ODM leader's sentiments.
Recently, Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri has been at the center of controversy over his claims that there is a need for the country to export maize due to a shortage, which has led to increased prices.
Leaders from Western Kenya have demanded for his resignation over the plans to import maize, citing concerns that it would benefit cartels.
CS Kiunjuri has defended his stance, insisting that the country does not have enough maize, leading to increased prices.
He further claims that those against the move are on a political witch-hunt.
There are fears that the price of a 2-kilogram packet of maize flour could increase to Ksh. 150 in coming weeks, up from the current average price of Ksh. 109.
