On July 20, 2019, President Kenyatta commissioned Africa's largest wind power farm in Loiyangalani, Turkana County, marking a significant milestone in Kenya's renewable energy sector.
The Lake Turkana Wind Power farm boasts an impressive installed capacity of 310 megawatts of clean, reliable, and low-cost electricity.
Since its inception, the wind power project has reduced the country's reliance on expensive diesel-generated thermal power, resulting in savings of over Sh8 billion in just eight months.
During the commissioning ceremony, President Kenyatta expressed his pride in Kenya's achievement, saying, “With this monumental feat, as Kenya scores another first in Africa, I challenge all Kenyans to remain, resilient builders who build best when called upon to build greatly.”
The government has committed to encouraging both Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) and the private sector to develop wind farms and other renewable green sources of electricity, as evident in the successful implementation of the Lake Turkana Wind Power project.
