On July 20, 2019, musician Steven Otieno, alias Simple Boy, shared his experience of being compared to a monkey, but revealed he has moved past the pain.

"You know; it is painful but there was nothing I could do but just persevere. I believe in myself no one knows what the future holds and that the person who you might be despising today, could be the one to save you tomorrow," he said in an interview with local television.

Simple Boy, who hails from Kibera slums, has used his music to campaign against drug abuse and crime, issues that have affected many young people in the area due to unemployment and poverty.
