Published on July 20, 2019, a report by a popular business investigative online magazine revealed that SportPesa, a giant betting firm, made over Sh100 billion in revenues last year in Kenya.

The report, carried by the Guardian, quoted investigative website Finance Uncovered as saying that SportPesa's revenue in Kenya alone exceeded $1 billion, but the company does not publicly disclose its revenues or profits in Africa or the UK.

A SportPesa spokesperson disputed the figure, describing it as a 'very significant overstatement' and stating that the company had made a commercial decision not to publish its revenues to protect its competitiveness.

The revelation comes two months after Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i announced tough measures to be taken against firms evading taxes, including the suspension of betting agency licences and deportation of foreign directors of gambling firms.
