On July 14, 2019, a horrific incident occurred in Kibera's Bombolulu area of Nairobi, where a woman's anger turned violent after her son stole her church offering money.

Agnes Mutua, the mother, pleaded guilty to charges before Kibera senior principal magistrate Esther Boke, stating that she was enraged after her son, Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, took the cash while she prayed during church service.

According to court records, Mutua used hot polythene bags to burn her son's head, stomach, and other parts of his body. The incident was reported after a Good Samaritan spotted the injured child returning from school and took him to a private clinic for treatment.

After the accused was arrested and taken to Kilimani police station, Mutua told the court that the devil caused her to torture her child, claiming she was not aware of her actions at the time.

The magistrate directed that a probation report be filed in court before Mutua's sentencing on July 28, 2019.
