Published on July 20, 2019, fish farming has become a lucrative venture in Kenya, attracting many agriprenuers due to its high marketability and protein-rich nature.

With the right location, steady water supply, and suitable fish species, fish farming can be a profitable business. Traditionally, lake regions have done well in fish farming, with Kisumu, Homa Bay, and Mombasa being among the top producers in Kenya.

One of the best fish farming methods involves constructing fish ponds with a suitable design, taking into account the species of fish being reared. Feeds for fish also vary depending on the type of fish, but feeding is relatively easy, requiring only the dropping of feed into the water.

Due to water pollution in many water bodies, pond fish farming has become a popular option among fish farmers. Tilapia has been rated as one of the best types of fish to rear, due to its large size, high protein levels, and potential to grow larger in size.

Fish farming not only provides employment opportunities but also contributes to national economic development by earning foreign exchange. As a domestic source of food, fish farming is a vital industry in Kenya.
