On Thursday, July 18, 2019, a devastating fire broke out at Kamuiru Boys High School in Kirinyaga Central Sub-County, leaving 160 students without shelter.

The fire, which occurred shortly before 8pm, destroyed two dormitories and caused significant damage to property. County fire fighters arrived late at the scene, with the head of the county fire department, John Kiama, stating that they received information late and the dormitory had already been destroyed by the time they arrived.

According to County Director of Education Margaret Mwirigi, an electric fault is suspected to have caused the evening fire, although investigators are still on the ground to establish the cause. The scene has since been secured by detectives as learning resumed.

Worried parents thronged the school to see their children, with some holding an impromptu fund raiser to assist the students who lost belongings during the incident. Principal Stephen Muchiri was at hand to contain the anxiety.
