On July 19, 2019, the National Environment Management Authority (Nema) reversed its order to close Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club in Kenya after the hotel initiated compliance with environmental regulations.

Nema had apprehended the hotel's manager on July 18, 2019, for discharging untreated effluent into the environment, citing non-compliance with rules for discharging effluent.

According to Nema, the hotel had failed to implement recommendations proposed to it on June 20, 2019, and a closure order had been issued.

However, the authority stated that Windsor had 'initiated compliance and put measures to prevent waste water flowing into the environment.'

As part of its crackdown on environmental offenders, Nema has been carrying out inspections across the country, resulting in the closure of several businesses, including hotels and factories.

Among those affected are Baringo County Referral Hospital, which was also found to be discharging untreated sewage into a nearby river, and Sameer Agriculture and Livestock Limited, whose manager was arrested on July 16, 2019, for flouting regulations.

Additionally, four hotels in Kwale were shut down indefinitely on July 14, 2019, for failing to comply with water quality regulations.
