On July 19, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced that Ekuru Aukot's 'Punguza Mizigo' Initiative had met the required threshold of at least one million signatures.

The initiative, which aimed to reduce the burden of cost of governance to taxpayers, was supported by a total of 1,222,541 registered voters.

IEBC stated that the Aukot-led party delivered a draft Constitutional Amendment Bill and details of supporters of the draft Bill on February 28, 2019.

As a result, the draft Bill will now be submitted to each of the 47 County Assemblies for consideration within 3 months from the date of submission by the commission.

Earlier, ODM's Secretary General Edwin Sifuna had bet his political career on the initiative failing, saying he would resign if Aukot's party collected one million signatures.

However, when the initiative succeeded, Sifuna attempted to backtrack, claiming he was misquoted and that he had said he would re-sign, not resign.

He also denied being on KBC TV's Good Morning Kenya show, where he made the original statement, and claimed not to know who Third Way Alliance is.
