On a somber note, ODM Leader Raila Odinga paid a heartfelt visit to the Kadenge family on Tuesday afternoon, accompanied by Vihiga Senator Joe Khaniri. The condolence visit was a testament to the close friendship between Raila and the late Joe Kadenge, a renowned Kenyan soccer icon.
As Raila Odinga condoled with the family, he pledged to stand with them during this difficult time, promising to support them in offsetting the departed icon's hospital bills. In a tweet, Raila expressed his condolences, saying, 'Spent time with the family of the late Joe Kadenge at his residence in South B. We have lost a great ambassador for the country and Kenyan soccer. May the Lord grant them comfort at this difficult moment and may his soul Rest In Peace.'
Joe Kadenge's relationship with Raila Odinga spanned several years, with the two sharing a deep bond. This friendship was evident when Joe Kadenge gave Raila the privilege of writing the foreword for his biography, 'Joe Kadenge: The Life of a Football Legend,' authored by veteran sports journalist John Nene. In the book's foreword, Raila Odinga wrote, 'The story of Kenyan football cannot be complete without the name of Joe Kadenge, both by longevity of playing and the duration of remaining a star. It is my hope that the book will inspire the next generation of players.'
Joe Kadenge's burial is scheduled for July 20 at his Hamisi home in Vihiga county, with the family estimating the costs to be around Sh5 million. The family has appealed to well-wishers and the government to help cater for the expenses, as they strive to give the departed icon a befitting burial.
As the family prepares to say their final goodbyes, they will hold a requiem mass on Wednesday, June 17, at the Friends International Centre along Ngong road. The family spokesperson, Chris Mbwanga, has urged everyone to come and pay their respects to the departed icon.
