Published on July 19, 2019, the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) has taken drastic measures to address the environmental concerns surrounding the luxurious Windsor Golf Hotel.
The hotel, located in a prime area, has been releasing untreated waste into the environment, prompting NEMA to issue a closure order.
According to NEMA, the hotel manager was arrested for discharging untreated effluent into the environment, a clear violation of environmental laws.
Windsor Golf Hotel, built by former Environment Minister John Michuki, has been a subject of concern for the local community, with former Kimabu Governor William Kabogo raising a complaint to the government over the release of toxic waste into a nearby river.
“Save us from Windsor Hotel pollution. We can’t sleep at night, they are releasing raw toxic effluent in to the river. I doubt you will do anything coz it has been reoccurring. @StateHouseKenya I have hope coz Tobiko is Tibim,” Kabogo said in April.
NEMA has also cited the hotel's failure to implement recommendations proposed to it by the Authority on June 20, 2019, as a reason for the closure order.
