On July 17, 2018, President Uhuru Kenyatta addressed a ceremony at the State House in Nairobi, where he awarded several police officers with the Head of State Commendations.

During the ceremony, Uhuru congratulated the police officers for their sacrifice in serving Kenyans and emphasized the need for police reform.

He directed Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to provide a comprehensive strategy to reform the police service within 30 days.

The president also tasked the duo with developing a plan to address the long-standing housing problem faced by police officers.

Uhuru's directives came at a time when the police service was facing several challenges, hindering quality service delivery.
