Published on July 19, 2019, Nairobi County's crackdown on unsafe meat continues with a raid on the Burma Market.

Deputy Director of Public Health, Wilson Langat, has directed county public health officers to step up their operations in all meat outlets selling unsafe meat.

Langat emphasized that the county's efforts are not limited to supermarkets and butcheries alone, but also involve veterinary officers ensuring no unsafe meat enters the Burma Market for consumption.

Yesterday, the Nairobi City County government closed the meat sections of several outlets, including The Point Naivas Buruburu, Muthaiga Fine Meat Limited, Naivas Gateway Mall, and Tuskys Kenyatta Avenue.

Health CEC revealed that samples taken from Tuskys supermarket in Kenyatta Avenue showed 63,000ml of sodium metabid sulphite preservative in a kilogram of meat, exceeding the required limit of 500ml.

Butchers at Kanyama stage in Kariobangi North, like Michael Maina, have been counting losses following the recent expose on red meat.

‘‘I buy a 40 kg of meat from Njiru slaughter house daily, very fresh and selling them within two days my preservative is a cooler not this drug we are hearing…but I can tell you our customers have run away from us, nobody wants nyama.’’ He said.

The national government has launched an independent investigation into the matter, confirming that some meat outlets have been using excess preservatives to prolong the life of red meat in their stores.
