The government has announced plans to re-open the Huduma Namba registration exercise for Kenyans who failed to enroll in April.

According to government spokesperson Cyrus Oguna, the registration process will be re-opened to allow those who lacked birth certificates or other documents to register.

Mr. Oguna revealed that the government will deploy two clerks in every sub-location to oversee the exercise, but did not disclose whether the exercise will be continuous or have a deadline.

The move comes as the government prepares to present a bill in parliament that will deny access to crucial public services for individuals without a Huduma card.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i is preparing to present a bill in parliament that will link Huduma Namba to various public services, including voter registration, universal healthcare, passport, driving license, mobile phone registration, taxes, and banking services.

Dr. Matiang'i defended the bill, saying it will create an efficient identity system that will present opportunities for fiscal savings, development of the digital economy, and enhanced public and private sector service delivery.

The public participation on the proposed bill is set to happen on Thursday, July 25, 2019, at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi.
