On July 19, 2019, Archbishop Jackson ole Sapit of the Anglican Church of Kenya spoke out against churches accepting money from politicians during fundraisers, stating that they should 'learn to worship God with its resources, quietly.'
His comments came after concerns were raised about churches receiving funds allegedly linked to corruption and money laundering during fundraising events.
Archbishop Sapit emphasized the need for churches to be mindful of the sources of their funds, saying, 'Let us not hype this thing of harambees and guests of honour because that is where, as the church, we go wrong.'
He also suggested that churches rethink the practice of allowing politicians to hold fundraisers in church sanctuaries, recommending that such events be held outside of church buildings.
Archbishop Sapit's remarks were made at the Serena Hotel in Nairobi following a meeting of the Multi-sectoral Initiative Against Corruption (MSIAC).
His comments follow a statement made by Bishop Timothy Gichere of the ACK Mt Kenya Central Diocese, who said that churches would continue to accept donations from politicians until the courts declared them corrupt.
