On December 25, 2013, a tragic incident occurred at Ndunyu market in Nyeri, where 28-year-old butcher Moses Kanyi Muchiri stabbed his colleague Samuel Muchungi Njoroge, alias Kigumo, to death.

The High Court in Nyeri found Muchiri guilty of manslaughter, a lesser charge than murder, as there was no intention to kill.

Justice Teresiah Matheka noted that Muchiri committed the offence while under the influence of alcohol and that the deceased was his friend.

According to a post-mortem report, Muchiri's fatal stab wound caused Njoroge's lungs to collapse, leading to his death.

During the sentencing, the State did not present the female reveller at the centre of the love triangle to testify.

However, a pre-sentence report conducted by probation officer Moses Muchuku indicated that Muchiri no longer takes alcohol following the incident.

Despite the victim's family declining to participate in the sentencing process, Justice Matheka ordered Muchiri to find the family and apologize, with the assistance of the probation office.
