On July 19, 2019, the High Court delivered a key ruling in favor of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko's affordable housing project in Pangani estate.
A group of residents had moved to court seeking to stop the implementation of the project, citing lack of clear information and consultation. However, the county argued that some of the tenants had already received compensation cheques but were still living in the houses.
Lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui, who represented Sonko's government, said the court had dismissed the application for an injunction, paving the way for the project to proceed as planned.
"The project will commence and it will come to a conclusion within the parameters that were set. There will be nothing to stop the project in this instance," Kinyanjui said.
According to Kinyanjui, the residents had been offered Sh600,000 to relocate and would be given first priority in the allocation of the houses once they were completed.
The eviction of the residents on Monday paved the way for the construction of 15,000 affordable housing units, with contractors expected to lay the groundwork on Friday, July 19, 2019.
