President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga have called urgent meetings with their MPs next week as they try to build support for the Gender Bill.
The two parties hold the biggest blocs in Parliament, giving their backing major weight in the vote. Jubilee has 140 MPs, while ODM has 62.
2018 Judiciary report flags a human resource crisis ¶
An internal Judiciary report has described a serious staffing problem, saying junior employees have been placed in roles that do not match their training or job descriptions.
One example in the report says a human resource assistant was told to do guard duty instead of routine HR work such as preparing CVs and setting interview dates.
Search for abducted Italian aid worker expands in Kilifi ¶
Security officers have arrested 14 people after gunmen shot five people and abducted an Italian aid worker in Chakama, Kilifi county, on Tuesday night.
The search has grown into a major operation involving the Kenya Defence Forces, police, GSU, Kenya Wildlife Service, Administration Police and Special Forces. The teams are using drones as they pursue suspects believed to be hiding in the forest.
DPP pushes for suspects to vacate office once charged ¶
Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji wants Parliament to amend the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act so that graft suspects, including constitutional office holders, step aside once charged.
Haji, a former deputy director at the National Intelligence Service, said some suspects who were allowed back into office were using their positions to subvert justice. He said he would petition Parliament on the proposed change.
Land commission says SGR compensation went to revoked titles ¶
National Land Commission vice-chair Abigael Mukolwe says compensation for the Standard Gauge Railway was paid to property owners whose titles had already been revoked.
In an affidavit, she said the payments in Embakasi and Athi River went against a resolution of the committee on review of grants and disposition, which she chairs.
Lamu police reject plea to ignore seat belts ¶
Police in Lamu have rejected a request from residents who wanted to travel without seat belts.
The residents said seat belts could slow them down if they needed to escape an attack by Al Shabaab militants. Lamu County Police Commander Muchangi Kioi said traffic rules would still be enforced and no vehicle would be allowed to break them.
