The U.S. government has been pressing wireless and internet providers in allied countries to avoid equipment made by Huawei Technologies, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
The outreach has gone to government counterparts and telecom executives in countries where Huawei gear is already widely deployed, the report said, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter. The concern is that the equipment could create cybersecurity risks.
Huawei has faced growing scrutiny in the United States. Intelligence officials and other critics have argued that the company, along with other Chinese firms, could be influenced by the Chinese government or the ruling Communist Party, which they say raises espionage concerns.
The Wall Street Journal also reported that Washington is considering more financial support for telecommunications development in countries that reject Chinese-made equipment.
One of the concerns centers on Chinese telecom gear in countries that host U.S. military bases, including Germany, Italy and Japan.
Huawei did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
